The purpose of this research is a comparative study of the content and component composition of Satureja hortensis L. essential oil from natural pop-ulations of Dagestan. The determination of the essential oil content was carried out by steam distillation from plant raw materials followed by volume measurement. The component composition of the essential oil was determined by the chromatography-mass spectrometry using Shimadzu GCMS-QP 2010 plus chromato-graph with the mass spectrometric quadrupole detector. According to the results of the research, the S. hortensis essential oils from different populations vary in content and component composition. The content of essential oil in S. hortensis in populations varies from 0,76 to 1,66%. In the S. hortensis essential oil, 25 to 29 individual components were de-tected from the populations. The number of components by population is different. The number of them in the Kegerskaya population is minimal, in Zaibskaya - the maximal. There are 20 common components in the S. hortensis essential oil, 6 (30%) of which are is major. They are Myrcene, α-Terpinene, Carvacrol, p-Cymene, γ-Terpinene and Thymol. The content of Thymol is maximal relative to other components. In the three populations, except for Irganaiskaya, there are components in S. hortensis oil, which are absent in others. These components are different in each case, and their amount is insignificant (from 0,12 to 0,70%). For Kegerskaya population, those are Vinyl amyl carbinol and Carvone, for Zaibskaya – Linalool, β-Bourbonene and Germacrene D, for Khiyahskaya – α-Copaene and γ-Muurolene. The differences noted in the content and component composition of the essential oil in S. hortensis samples do not correlate with an altitude above sea level. The obtained data allow us to evaluate the possibilities for the introduction and development of recommendations on the cultivation of S. hor-tensis in Dagestan as a promising essential oil plant.
