THE INFLUENCE OF ZINC ASPARAGINATE ON ANTIOXIDANT ENZYMES ACTIVITY AND ZINC AND SELENIUM CONTENT IN ORGANS AND TISSUES OF RATS

Zinc compounds are widely used in prophylactic and sport medicine. However, data on the influence of zinc on selenium status are limited. Consequently, the aim of our study was to estimate the effect of intragastric administration of zinc asparaginate on zinc and selenium distribution in rats’ organism and activity of glutathione peroxidase and superoxide dismutase. The effect of 5 and 15 mg/kg/day zinc asparaginate on zinc and selenium content in liver, kidney, heart, muscle, serum, and hair as well as on antioxidant enzymes activity was evaluated after 7 and 14 days of treatment. Zinc and selenium concentrations were assessed using inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Serum glutathione peroxidase and superoxide dismutase activity were measured spectrophotometrically. It has been shown that zinc asparaginate treatment increased liver, kidney and serum zinc content in a Биоэлементология ВОПРОСЫ БИОЛОГИЧЕСКОЙ, МЕДИЦИНСКОЙ И ФАРМАЦЕВТИЧЕСКОЙ ХИМИИ, №8, 2015 35 dose-dependent manner. At the same time, Zn levels in cardiac and skeletal muscles were not altered by the treatment. A positive influence of zinc on selenium concentration in tissues and organs has been detected. Moreover, correlation between these parameters was also significant. The investigation of serum antioxidants has shown that zinc supplementation significantly alters glutathione peroxidase activity without affecting superoxide dismutase. Thus, the obtained data indicate that increased glutathione peroxidase activity may be a consequence of zinc-induced modulation of selenium status. At the same time, additional studies are required for estimation of intimate mechanisms of zinc-selenium interplay.
