According to WHO, more than 80% of people globally use traditional medicines for treatment, mainly herbal agents – herbal mixtures, extracts or individual substances isolated from plant raw materials. A quarter of medicines used in developed countries are based on herbal biologically active substances. Herbal medicinal products constitute about half of the total quantity of medicines in Russia. The major part of the domestic phytopreparations was developed by FGBNU VILAR. VILAR (Russian Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants) is a unique and single Russian research institution, which conducts the whole complex of research studies ranging from evaluation of herbal sources and promising plant species, maintenance and development of their genetic fond, introduction of new plants, selection, seed growing, development of raw material base and new agricultural technologies, to search for biologically active substances and their testing and preclinical pharmacological and toxicological studies aimed at development of technologies of preparation of substances and therapeutic forms of phytoproducts. The Institute performs active patent policy aimed at protection of its scientific developments. At present, Institute intellectual property consists of 39 Russian patents for inventions in the fields of medicine and technologies of production of new substances and therapeutic forms, 15 patents for species of therapeutic plants, 3 patents for utility models in medicine, 14 trademarks, 4 applications for inventions and 2 applications for trademarks. Good study of the medicinal plants activity brings an opportunity for the developing of effective drugs, both from the individual substances (Allapinin), dry standardized extracts (Giporamin) and their complexes (Sibektan), and combination herbal medicinal product (Arfazetin) for successful of many years of use them in medical practice. During 85 years of FGBNU VILAR existence it was created more than 120 herbal medicines to correct functions of almost all bodies systems.
