Perennial grassy species of Ziziphora (Lamiaceae family) are growing wildly in the Mediterranean countries of the Middle East, Central Asia, the Western China, Mongolia, Eastern Siberia and in the Caucasus. Aqueous extracts from this plant are used in traditional medicine as the cardiac remedy, and for treatment of scrofula and flu. It is also applied externally for treatment of rheumatic diseases and toothache. Drugs from Ziziphora may also be used in cardiology, to reduce blood pressure, in gastro-intestinal diseases, intestinal atony, and as expectorant during bronchitis. The plant is prospective as the source for production of valuable biological active compounds: terpenoids, flavonoids, coumarins, alkaloids, using in medicine and pharmacy.
