Royleanones represent abietan diterpenoids where ring C has a structure of p-quinone. For the first time this group of natural compounds were isolated from Inula royleana D.C. and it got its name from the name of the plant species. Methods of their isolation from plant raw materials have been considered. The literature data on the study royleanones represent abietan diterpenoids where ring C has a structure of p-quinone in the chemical, biomedical and botanical aspects is presented. It is shown their prevalence in specific plant sources. The features of the chemical structure of royleanones tropical species of plants and plant mid-latitudes are considered. Based on a comparison of the structure and chemical properties of royleanones and tanshinone structures suggested their biogenetic connection. Methods for establishing the structure of royleanones are also considered. The analysis of 1H NMR and 13C NMR spectra made it pos-sible to identify the characteristic parameters of the respective spectra of roy-leanones. Also in the article are given the data of mass-spectrometric study of royleanones. Royleanones have not only antimicrobial, insecticidal, but also cytotoxic activity. The data on the biological royleanones activity give a reason to consider them as promising as drugs.
