Today the sucrose is the main commonly used food sweetener derived from sugar-beet or sugarcane. However, the excessive sugar consumption could undermine human’s health. In the world, where problem of obesity continues to grow, the studies on natural sugar substitutes are of vital importance. The object of our study is Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni (Asteraceae). Its leaves are rich with sweet glycosides, the major and the most valuable substance of them is stevioside, which has a hypoglycemic effect – reduces blood sugar level. It has strong sweet taste, about 300 times sweeter than sucrose and generally recognized as safe. Stevioside is widely used as low-calorie sugar substitute product. The aim of our study is to select and optimize the medium for Stevia rebaudiana morphogenesis regulation and to determine the light spectral effect on stevia growth in vitro.
