THE INFLUENCE OF THE GROWTH REGULATOR ZIRKON AND FEROVIT ON THE CONTENT AND COMPOSITION OF THE ESSENTIAL OIL IN THE SUMMER SAVORY (SATUREJA HORTENSIS L.)

The article presents the data on the influence of the growth regulators Zircon and Ferovit on the essential oil composition in the summer savory (Satureja hortensis L.) cv. «Aromatnyi»; the contents of essential oil in the raw material of the summer savory after treatment with Zircon and Ferovit depending on the variety and developmental stage are described in the most detailed way. It is known that Zircon preparation, containing hydroxycinnamic acids, improves the stability of medicinal plants; it is characterized by the antioxidant activity and influences not only the accumulation of secondary metabolites and phenolic metabolism in particular, but also the content of essential oils in the medicinal raw material. A Ferovit preparation, a universal stimulator of photosynthesis and respiration in plants, containing a chelated form of iron, is involved in red-ox reactions, and possibly causes an indirect influence on the contents and component composition of the essential oils in crops. According to the literature sources, a significant portion of summer savory’s essential oils accounts for phenolic compounds (carvacrol, thymol, p-cymene) whereas other sources report the absence of thymol in essential oil of this species. In this regard, the aim of our work was to study the joint influence of Zircon and Ferovit on the quantitative essential oil content in the raw material of the summer savory and its component composition. The experiments were conducted at the Experimental station of Vegetable growing named after V.I. Edelstein in early spring of 2015 – 2016. The treatment with growth regulators and biochemical tests were conducted in 2016, in the phase of 4–5 pairs of true (foliage) leaves. The control plants were treated with water. The samples for distillation of the essential oil were collected twice in the phase of budding – beginning of flowering and end of flowering – early fruiting during the dry season. The essential oil content was determined in the fresh raw material on the day of collection, distillation being carried out according to GF XI method 1 (by Ginzburg). All the experiments were repeated at least 4 times. The component composition of the essential oil was determined by gas chromatography using chromatograph Shimadzu GC-MS 2010 with a massspectrometric detector GCMS-QP 2010. For all peak, linear retention indices were calculated. The peaks were identified according to the mass spectra library NIST 11. As the result of studies of five summer savory varieties, differing in morphological characteristics and rhythms of seasonal development have revealed, Zircon and Ferovit preparations appeared to cause ambiguous reaction of plants. After the treatment with Ferovit, the essential oil content in raw materials in some varieties increased (varieties: “Picnic”, “Breeze” and “Dwarf”), while in other ones it declined (varieties: “Perechnyi aromat”, “Aromatnyi”). When Zircon preparation was used, the essential oil content decreased in all varieties, especially in a dwarfing variety “Dwarf” from 0.54 % in the control to 0.30%. Regardless of the preparation, after the treatment with Ferovit and Zircon solutions, the fraction of the sum of γ-terpinene and carvacrol remained constant 85.18 – 85,59%, while in case of treatment with Ferovit the percentage of carvacrol decreased by approximately 5% due to the increase in the proportion of γ-terpinene by the same amount.
