Xanthium strumarium L. and other closely related species took increased attention as a potential source to produce herbal medicines with different pharmacological activities. Extracts of X. strumarium show antimicrobial, antifungal, hypoglycemic, diuretic, antiulcer activity. There was study of herbal medicine for anti-inflammatory activity of grass and dry extracts of X. strumarium and fractionation products using a biotest system in VILAR. Chemical study showed the presence of sesquiterpene lactones, in particular epimers xanthanol and isoxantanol. There was also shown a presence of p-methoxyphenylcaprinoyl, axillarin, sitosterol. Substances with a high iodine content are isolated. Identification of all isolated substances was carried out according to 1H NMR spectra, TLC chromatography. Absence of blue test with starch (a qualitative reaction to iodine in the free state) allows to exclude the presence of free iodine. Consequently, it is part of the molecules of organic compounds
